Chemotherapy

Depending on the type of cancer you are diagnosed with and its location in or around the spine, chemotherapy may or may not be used in your treatment. The goal of chemotherapy is to destroy cancerous cells throughout the entire body. It is administered intravenously (through an IV), by pill or by injection.

There are more than 100 chemotherapy medications that can be used in combination to best treat your cancer. You and your physician will decide what drug or combination of medications you will get. Then, your physician at the Florida Hospital Brain and Spinal Cancer Program will choose the doses, how the drugs will be given, and how often and how long you will get treatment.

Most people are concerned with the side effects that chemotherapy is known to bring such as nausea, vomiting and hair loss. Doctors at the Florida Hospital Brain and Spinal Cancer Program will monitor these and may prescribe medications to help you manage any side effects you experience.
