Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is effective against tumors that have metastasized from other areas to the spine or spinal cord. These could include prostate tumors, breast adenocarcinomas, lung adenocarcinomas, renal cell carcinomas and gastric carcinomas.

To offset the side effects of radiation therapy such as nausea and vomiting, doctors at the Florida Hospital Brain and Spinal Cancer Program may recommend some medications designed to minimize their effects.

Our tumor specialists are improving radiation therapies for spine and spinal cord tumors. Modifications to the dosage of radiation or the use of sophisticated technologies such as 3-D conformal radiation therapy are offering better protection to healthy tissue. Additionally, the Florida Hospital Brain and Spinal Cancer Program is at the forefront of trying new radiation therapies as they emerge from leading research institutions across the globe. Many of these advanced treatments are offered through the program’s clinical trials.
