Tumors in and around the spine and spinal cord aren’t as common as brain tumors, but they do occur. The majority of spinal cord tumors are found in children and young adults, but anyone can be diagnosed with a tumor at any point in their life.
Thanks to new techniques and tools being employed by neurosurgeons at the Florida Hospital Brain and Spinal Cancer Program, tumors that once were thought of as inaccessible are now within reach. For example, high-powered microscopes and sophisticated imaging technologies allow surgeons to see the operating environment in incredible detail so that healthy tissue is left untouched as much as possible.
Surgical options are best for intramedullary (within the spinal cord) and intradural-extramedullary tumors (within the spine, but outside the nerves). Though benign tumors are good candidates for surgery - even those in the vertebrae - metastatic tumors can be challenging.
Recovery after spinal surgery can take weeks or months. Although you may experience side effects, such as swelling, pain or the loss of sensation, physicians at the Florida Hospital Brain and Spinal Cancer Program work diligently to minimize these effects.
Rest assured that the experienced team treating you at the Florida Hospital Brain and Spinal Cancer Program will review all of your options with you and answer all of your questions. Throughout your treatment, we will be here every step of the way to help you understand your treatment and address your needs.
