Types of Adult Brain Tumors

Regardless of the form it takes, an adult brain tumor is caused by the formation of abnormal cells in the tissues of the brain. There are more than 100 types of brain tumors with which an adult may be diagnosed.

Tumors may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). In most cases, benign brain tumors grow and press on neighboring areas of the brain. They don't usually spread to other tissues and rarely return once treated. Cancerous or malignant tumors typically grow quickly and can spread to other tissues in the brain. As the tumor grows and presses against an area of the brain, it may impair brain function. Early detection is important for all cancer diagnoses.
